5 Signs You Shouldn't Wait for Your Next Checkup
Some dental problems whisper before they shout. These five warning signs mean it's worth coming in before your scheduled visit.

Dental problems rarely announce themselves all at once. They start quietly, with a twinge here and a little pink in the sink there, and the earlier we catch them, the smaller and less expensive the fix. Here are five signals worth acting on now rather than at your next scheduled visit.
1. Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
Healthy gums don't bleed. Occasional bleeding usually means gingivitis, inflammation from plaque along the gumline, which is completely reversible with a professional cleaning and better home care. Ignored, it can progress to periodontitis, which permanently damages the bone supporting your teeth. Bleeding is your earliest, cheapest warning. Take it.
2. Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets
A zing from ice water now and then is common. Sensitivity that's new, worsening, or lingers more than a few seconds can mean enamel erosion, gum recession exposing the root, a cracked tooth, or decay approaching the nerve. Each has a different fix, and all of them are easier early.
3. Pain when you bite down
Chewing pain that's localized to one tooth often points to a crack or a failing filling. Cracks are sneaky: they don't always show on X-rays, and they widen under chewing force. Caught early, a crown can hold the tooth together. Caught late, the crack can split below the gumline where the tooth can't be saved.
4. Persistent bad breath
Breath that doesn't improve with brushing and flossing usually has a source: trapped food and bacteria under the gumline, dry mouth, an infected tooth, or sometimes issues beyond the mouth entirely. A checkup finds the cause instead of masking it with mints.
5. Jaw pain, clicking, or morning headaches
Waking with a sore jaw or dull headaches is a classic sign of nighttime grinding (bruxism), something most grinders don't know they do. Grinding wears enamel flat and can crack teeth over years. A custom night guard is a simple, non-invasive fix that protects decades of future dental work.
The pattern behind all five
Every item on this list is dramatically cheaper and simpler to treat early. That's the entire philosophy of our practice: catch small things while they're small, explain your options clearly, and never rush you into treatment you don't need.
